Volkstadt Memorial Scholarship

The Volkstadt Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 thanks to a charitable donation from the estate of the late Charles and Martha Volkstadt. Mrs. Volkstadt was the Director of the United Way of the Titusville Region for more than 25 years.

Mrs. Volkstadt understood the importance of volunteerism in the community and instilling a passion for volunteerism in our youth.  The purpose of the Volkstadt Memorial Scholarship is to accentuate the importance of volunteerism in the community and to recognize those students who provide volunteer service.

The scholarship awards up to $1,000 annually to a student located within the Titusville Area School District.  Since its introduction, the scholarship has awarded funds to help youth of the community reach their goals.  2024 represents the 25th awarding of the Volkstadt Award and over $46,000 in scholarships.

The Volkstadt Memorial Scholarship for Service to the Titusville Region is open from April 1st, 2024 – April 30th, 2024.

The scholarship will be awarded based on the following criteria:

  1. THS graduating senior pursuing higher education
  2. Successful applicant will have served the Titusville region in a volunteer capacity with one or more agency or organization
  3. Application must be complete including essays listed below and required documents
  4. Finalists may be required to sit for an interview with the scholarship committee
  5. One scholarship will be awarded annually

Information about the scholarship

  1. The scholarship committee will award up to $1,000
  2. Application Deadline is April 30th, 2024 and needs to be submitted to the United Way of the Titusville Region, PO Box 401, 208 W. Spring Street, Titusville, PA 16354.

Required Attachments:

  1. Letter(s) of recommendation from at least one of the agencies or organizations listed under the volunteer service portion of the application.
  2. Letter of acceptance.
  3. Copy of financial aid SAR
  4. Essay
    1. Describe why you chose to volunteer with the agencies listed and what did you learn from the experience? How do you plan to continue your volunteer service during and after your post-secondary education years
    2. You may include any additional information about yourself or your financial circumstances and how they relate to your pursuit of higher education. (3-page limit)

2023 Volkstadt Memorial Scholarship Awardee

The United Way of the Titusville Region is proud to announce the 2023 recipient of the Volkstadt Memorial Award, Madison Wakefield. This award is presented to area seniors pursuing post-secondary education who have shown a passion for volunteerism in the community.

Ms. Wakefield has a GPA of 3.9, has continuously been on the high honor roll through high school, and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is involved in multiple extra-curricular activities at Titusville High School including district and regional chorus, marching band, and theater. She is involved in Titusville Summer Theater, Meadville Academy Theatre, and Barrow Civic Theatre.

Maddison’s volunteer service includes sorting clothing for Associated Charities’ Back to School drive, helping with Community Services of Venango County’s food distribution, participating in the OC & T Railroad WWII Remembrance Ceremony, dressing as an elf for the Santa Train, and volunteering for the United Way of Venango County. Ms. Wakefield will be attending PennWest Edinboro for Communication Disorders-Speech Pathology to become a Speech Pathologist.
